3-Day trekking expedition kicks off to boost eco-tourism in Uri

Srinagar, July 27: In a bid to promote border and eco-tourism in north Kashmir, a group of local trekkers embarked on a three-day expedition from Garkote village to Kandi Pass in Uri, days after the launch of the ‘Challo Uri’ campaign by Hon’ble MLA Dr Sajjad Shafi.

A statement said that the trekking journey, which began on July 26 and concludes on July 28, passes through a series of scenic and culturally significant locations including Batang, Latimar, Baba Fareed, Upper Dana, Bela Bhayun, and Bela, culminating at the historic Kandi Pass.

The 15-member team is led by Maqsood Ahmad, a former broadcaster with All India Radio (AIR) Srinagar, who said the initiative is aimed at promoting eco, border, and heritage tourism in Uri — a region rich in natural beauty and cultural legacy but often overlooked in mainstream travel circuits.

“This event is not just a trekking activity but an effort to generate awareness about the ecological and cultural richness of Uri,” Ahmad said. “Through this, we hope to engage local communities, highlight the potential for sustainable tourism, and attract attention to the unexplored beauty of this border town.”

The trekkers expressed gratitude to the residents along the route for their warm hospitality and support. Organisers believe that the campaign, along with such grassroots initiatives, could pave the way for tourism-led economic development in Uri by drawing nature lovers, adventure seekers, and cultural tourists to the area.

The ‘Challo Uri’ campaign, launched earlier this week, is part of a broader vision to position Uri as a responsible tourism destination while creating livelihood opportunities for local youth.
