Barrow Thorns Basketball Club celebrate 50 years with book
Barrow Thorns Basketball Club is celebrating 50 years in 2025.
To mark the special occasion, the club has launched a book and raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Former head coach Ian France wrote a book detailing highlights from the club’s 50 year history including national titles, European tournament successes and individual national honours.

The night of the launch was preceded by a special thank you from Mr France to all the teams who had represented Thorncliffe School and Barrow Town over the years, outlining the remarkable successes which culminated in ten national titles, eight times national runners up and fifteen times National semi-finalists/quarter finalists.
The book was written not just about the successes but also a reflection of the way the club has promoted Barrow’s name throughout the country and abroad.
The club’s efforts in hosting European teams, those from Canada, the USA and even the England National teams has gained much recognition for the Furness Area.
Mr France also reflects on the team spirit and humorous moments from the past five decades.
The Alzheimer’s Society was chosen as the recipients of this year’s fund raising efforts with a total of £4049 raised from the book sales and events on the evening.
The club said a special thanks to Barrow’s Georgia Stanway for the donation of a signed pair of football boots and to Liam Livingstone for a signed cricket shirt he wore in the World Cup cricket final.
A signed shirt from Bryan Robson from the 1980’s World Cup completed the auction.
Barrow Thorns have previously raised a total of over £5,000 for Cancer Research and the Furness General Oncology department.
The first fundraising event was held after the tragic deaths of former players David Cole and Daniel Logan in 2003 while the second fund raiser was in 2015 on the club’s 40th Anniversary.
This was celebrated by holding a fun tournament between four of their past National winning teams.
