Eddie Murphy Says ‘Shrek’ Spinoff Donkey Movie Begins Production Soon For 2028 Release
The Shrek franchise is set to return in 2026 with a fifth installment of the story of the fairy tale ogre and his colorful friends. However, that is not the only project heading into production, as star Eddie Murphy recently shared more information on the Donkey spinoff movie, which he will begin working on really soon. In a new interview, Murphy also teased exactly when fans will be getting to see the new film featuring everyone’s favorite loudmouthed equine.
Speaking to ScreenRant about his new movie, The Pickup, Murphy was asked about the upcoming Shrek 5 and very quickly took a segue into the additional new movie that he previously hinted at back in 2024. Asked about whether he had completed his work on Shrek 5, Murphy said:
“We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing Shrek. We start in September on Donkey, we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now, but we’re about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September.”

Fans Are Already Demanding ‘Shrek 5’ Should Be Canceled After Seeing Just 15 Seconds of Footage
‘Shrek 5’ is still almost two years away, but fans have already been airing their annoyance over a new teaser for the movie.
This suggests that fans will get to see the new Donkey project in 2028. According to Murphy, it will be a new movie and will take a similar route to that of the Puss in Boots movies, which centered on Antonio Banderas’ feline character.
“Donkey’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”
Shrek Is Returning After 16 Years, but Should He?
DreamWorks
Recent years have proven, as if we need reminding, that you can’t keep a successful IP down. The Shrek franchise seemed to have reached a conclusion with Shrek Forever After in 2010. DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said at the time of the film’s release that it was time to bring the Shrek saga to a close, and it seemed like he was not joking until the Puss in Boots movies continued to be incredibly successful.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a belated entry in the franchise in 2022 and became one of the most successful movies in the franchise despite landing just after the reopening of cinemas following the Covid pandemic closures. Now, we are going back to the land of Far Far Away not just once, but twice in the coming years. The question is, does the world need more Shrek movies? Can they live up to their predecessors? And can everyone get over the changes in animation that have already caused controversy among long-time fans? All these answers and more will be revealed when Shrek 5 debuts next year.
