Passionate local figure skater in running for SI Youth Athlete of the Year competition
‘We simply entered her name to take part, and we were thrilled when she was selected as a contestant’
A North Bay area figure skater has been selected as part of the 2025 Youth Athlete of the Year competition being conducted by Sports Illustrated.
Makayla Rose is a passionate young North Bay figure skater.
The 14-year-old has participated in multiple provincial events and enjoys being on the ice every chance she gets. However, the competition isn’t about the best athlete, it is more about finding the most dedicated and passionate athletes aged 14 to 17 in the United States and Canada.
Chantal Rose is her proud Mom.
“We simply entered her name to take part, and we were thrilled when she was selected as a contestant,” she said.
Makayla started skating at the tender age of 6. Her Mom recalls signing her up for the Can Skate program, and it was back then that a skating coach recognized her abilities.
“She asked if Makayla wanted to figure skate, and I didn’t know much about it or if there was a program in North Bay,” said Chantal.
“The coach said they would take her under their wings as they saw great potential in Makayla. She always loved to skate, and I knew she was never going to be a hockey player, and that is where it started, and she has been figure skating ever since.”
Chantal says they got the idea about entering the contest from a figure skating dress seamstress in Sturgeon Falls.
“When she saw a post about the contest, she thought of Makayla right away,” Chantal said.
That’s when the Roses decided to apply.
“We’re searching for an exceptional young athlete who represents everything we love about sports: a dedication to greatness, fierce competition, and a commitment to their teammates and competitors alike,” Sports Illustrated stated in a competition post.
“The champion will appear in a 3BRAND advertisement in Sports Illustrated and receive $25,000 to set them up for a bright future.”
Public voting for the competition opens July 28th at 1 p.m., and people can cast one free vote per day to help Makayla advance through the rounds.

On the profile is a feature story on Makayla, including a story from Chantal about her proudest moment on the ice.
“One of the proudest moments was when Makayla forgot her solo mid-competition but bravely returned the next day to compete again,” Chantal said.
“She even made herself a T-shirt that said ‘I will never give up.’ Seeing her resilience and determination brought tears to my eyes — and just a year later, she qualified for Provincials.”
