New underground music space to open in Birmingham this month – News
A new underground music venue is opening in Birmingham this month.
Billed as a “community space for quality electronic music,” komunal comes from the team behind komrad — a Birmingham-based promoter and radio station running livestreams direct from a converted, bright pink caravan.
The intimate new space, which can fit around 110 people according to owners, will play host to the karavan booth, broadcasting “regular sessions” on komunal radio.

“The opportunity to open a space perfectly presented itself, and we knew that if we didn’t take it, we’d regret it,” komrad’s Matti Barton tells Mixmag. “So here we are!”
“komunal will focus on quality music and will be open as an event space, bar, and café, as well as being the physical home to komrad and the karavan,” he explains.
komunal will open on Shaw’s Passage in Digbeth on August 15, with its debut event welcoming Croatian DJ Dea Dvornik, one half of the Berlin-based duo ERIS.

Though no further events have been announced just yet, owners say it’s committed to hosting a “rotating line-up of carefully curated selectors and DJs”, focusing on contemporary club culture.
“This is a dream come true and I’m really excited for people to make their own of it,” Barton says. “We wouldn’t have made it this far without the community who have been so supportive these past five years.”
