Azadi Festival gears up with cricket, hockey, marathon, donkey cart race

LAHORE  –   A vibrant lineup of sports events including cricket, hockey, cycling, donkey cart races, marathon, and a girls’ motorbike rally will highlight the ongoing Independence Day celebrations in Karachi. Today (Sunday) in Manghopir, traditional sindhi wrestling (Malakhra) matches are scheduled after Zuhr prayers. The cricket festival will reach its peak on August 8 with an exhibition match between Commissioner Karachi XI and SJAS XI, set to take place at Karachi Gymkhana at 3 PM. A hockey match will be played on August 6 at 5 PM at KHA Ground Gulshan, while various cycling and girls’ motorbike races are also part of the celebration. A marathon and the ever-popular donkey cart race are expected to draw large crowds as part of the city’s unique festive traditions. Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporters of the recently held “Youm-e-Azadi Maarka-e-Haq Walk”, calling it a resounding success that promoted unity, peace, and patriotism. His message of appreciation was conveyed by Ghulam Muhammad Khan, Director Sports for Commissioner Karachi.  

Prominent personalities who supported and participated in the walk and festival preparations include Minister for Local Govt Saeed Ghani, Deputy Speaker Naveed Anthony, Additional IGP Javed Alam Odho, DIGP Pir Muhammad Shah, DIGP Dr Farrukh Lanjar, DC West Ali Zulfiqar Memon, DC Korangi Masood Ahmed Bhutto, Chairman Jinnah Town Rizwan Sami, and SOA Secretary Ahmed Ali Rajput, among many others from civic, police, media, educational, and community sectors.
