Athletes, teams and fans unite for Langley health care

Sports Injury Month kicks off Aug. 16 – join the fun and raise vital funds for Langley Memorial Hospital

From soccer pitch to hockey rink and every trail, gym and court in between, sports are well represented in Langley, engaging athletes of all ages for fun, fitness and friendly competition.

Yet despite our best efforts and advances in safety gear, one of the consequences of those activities is the occasional injury. The fact is, whether it’s a novice soccer player with a knee injury or a senior skater with a potential concussion, many players and athletes at all levels will eventually receive care at Langley Memorial Hospital.

To support this essential care, Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation has partnered with local sports teams for the second annual Sports Injury Month initiative, a way to raise both awareness and vital funds for this essential care.

“When Langley’s athletes take the field, they know Langley Memorial Hospital has their back,” says Chris Ruscheinski, Foundation board member. “During Sports Injury Month, the Foundation is working with our local teams to fund critical equipment that enhances treatment and promotes better health for all our active community members.

“This campaign is about ensuring that every athlete, from youth hockey players to weekend warriors, can benefit from reliable care at LMH.”

This year’s Sports Injury Month kick-off – A Rosé Affair – is at Thunderbird Show Park Saturday, Aug. 16. Enjoy a live equestrian show and a buffet dinner and private bar service and take part in exciting fundraising games – yes, the popular mascot race is back! You can also network with the owners and players of Langley’s best sports teams, including the Rams, Thunder and Rivermen, as well as Vancouver Bandits, Vancouver Giants, Vancouver Football Club and more, all in support of urgent health care needs in Langley.

With dates continuing through fall, the Foundation is also joining your favourite local athletes for exciting game nights, featuring donation drives and raffles in support of Langley health care, plus interactive activities for fans and tributes to Langley’s health care heroes.

Games to date have included the Vancouver Bandits and Langley Thunder, with additional nights planned with the Langley Rams, Langley Rivermen, Vancouver Giants and the Vancouver Football Club:

Aug. 9: Langley Rams

Sept. 20: Vancouver Giants

Sept. 21: Vancouver Football Club

Nov.15: Langley Rivermen

Thanks to the support of teams, players and a generous community, the Foundation last year raised $1.1 million to replace both X-ray machines at Langley Memorial Hospital – machines that provide essential diagnostics for all Langley residents.

If you can’t make a game or the kick-off, you can also donate securely online – no matter whether you’re cheering from the stands, coaching a kids’ team or part of your local walking group, you can make a difference. Learn more at lchhfoundation.com/sports-injury-month
