This Rs 2 Lakh Gucci Bag Became A Style Legacy Thanks To Jackie Kennedy | Fashion

Jackie Kennedy influence on fashion

In the world of fashion, not more than a handful accessories actually have the power to transcend trends, generations, and even presidencies. But, believe it or not, there indeed is one handbag that managed to do that. And yes, it’s story is stitched into the legacy of one of America’s most beloved First Ladies.

If you haven’t guessed by now, we are talking about the Gucci Jackie Bag, a sleek and minimalist hobo-style bag that has historically been intertwined with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s signature style. To the point where Gucci eventually named it after her.

Long before Jackie came into the picture, Gucci had already launched the bag, only under a different name. In the early 1950s, the bag was simply called ‘Constance’ and was just one of several elegant leather bags offered by Gucci at the time. It featured a softly curved, half-moon silhouette, short shoulder strap, and Gucci’s signature piston-shaped clasp—both understated and distinctive.

But, things took a turn in the 1960s, when Jacqueline Kennedy, then Jackie O, was frequently photographed carrying the bag. Whether she was strolling through the streets of New York or vacationing in Capri, the bag became her constant companion. From red carpets to casual outings, the bag became a constant part of her effortless glamour.

As Jackie’s star power started growing to exponential lengths and fashion editors began associating her look with timeless sophistication, Gucci noticed the growing public interest in the bag. To honour her brand loyalty, the luxury label officially renamed the handbag “The Jackie” in 1961.

For all fashion enthusiasts out there, this is one of the earliest instances of a luxury brand formally acknowledging a celebrity muse by renaming a product after them. Yep, long before the Birkin or the Lady Dior.

Far from the flashy and boxy handbags of the era, what made the Gucci Jackie stand out was how it exuded quiet luxury. Today, the Jackie 1961 retails anywhere from ₹1.5 to ₹3 lakh, depending on the size, leather type, and customisation.
