MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos on Monday vowed that the relationship between the Philippines and India will have a “major boost and upgrade” through a strategic partnership.

“For seven and a half decades we have had excellent relations with India, but tomorrow this relationship is going to receive a major boost, a major upgrade, as the Prime Minister [Narendra Modi] and I inaugurate a strategic partnership between the Philippines and India,” Marcos said in his speech during his and his delegation’s meeting with the Filipino community.
“From now on, our cooperation will intensify further and become even more impactful in many areas that we had not explored with India before, such as defense, trade and investment, health, tourism, and other areas,” he continued.

Marcos added that his state visit also aims to attract more investors for the Philippines.

He also mentioned the upcoming launch of direct flights from Manila to India, which would lead to better people-to-people ties between the two countries.
“We are determined to expand this to other carriers and to link other cities between the Philippines and India,” the President said.

Marcos, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and the rest of his delegation landed at Palam Air Force Station at 2:20 p.m. (Indian Standard time) or 4:50 p.m. (Manila time) for his state visit scheduled from August 4 to 8.
In his pre-departure statement at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Marcos highlighted the Philippines and India’s maritime ties, emphasizing their shared strategic interests and values.

“Our geostrategic position as coastal states that border the busiest international trade routes and critical sea lines of communication in the Indo-Pacific region, our shared interest in protecting the rights and welfare of our international seafarers, our steadfastness in upholding international maritime law, including UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award, and our unwavering commitment to regional peace and cooperation serve as credible foundations of our active and growing maritime cooperation,” he said.
The Philippines and India are expected to sign at least six agreements during the visit, Office of Asian and Pacific Affairs Assistant Secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq said at a briefing last week. /cb
