5 minimalist homes in India that are quiet retreats in nature
Actor Aamir Ali’s villa in Assagao, Goa, is a quiet, minimalist retreat that blends simplicity with nature. Designed by Studio Indigofolds, the 3,800-square-foot home takes a less-is-more approach—think white walls, soft sage green accents, and a muted palette that favours texture over ornamentation. Instead of flashy finishes, the interiors lean on natural materials like stone, cane, and mango wood to create a warm, grounded feel.
Though minimal, the house doesn’t feel sparse. Lush courtyards, a breezy terrace den with valley views, and thoughtfully placed seating nooks bring in the outdoors at every turn. Each space is designed to open up rather than close off, encouraging a slower, more mindful way of living that reflects Goa’s laid-back rhythm.

Tucked away in Surat, this thoughtfully designed retreat blends pared-back living with a deep sense of place. Clean lines, muted materials, and an emphasis on function over flourish make the home feel quietly elegant. “The homeowners wished for every aspect of their home to be minimalist and connected to their lifestyle, rather than a fragmented representation of their taste,” explain the designers. “This is why everything follows a natural palette and is procured locally from artisans.”
The texture, the aesthetic and the palette of the home follow suite with the laidback subtlety, allowing for moments of calm and clarity. A single pop of terrazzo—designed like a carpet—on the living room floor adds just the right amount of visual interest without overwhelming the space.

Set amid nature and designed to leave a light footprint, this home by architects Teja Amonkar and Yatin Fulari is rooted in restraint, climate-consciousness, and quiet elegance. The architects were clear from the start—they didn’t want the home to encroach on the land. That ethos shaped the construction: a simple concrete frame with infills of hollow clay blocks, chosen for their thermal insulation and low material intensity. The walls were plastered with lime, a breathable, climate-responsive choice that enhances comfort naturally.
