Miranda Cosgrove Seals the Fate of the iCarly Reboot Movie 2 Years After Paramount+ Cancelation

Miranda Cosgrove isn’t done playing Carly Shay yet. The actor has offered a major update on the status of the iCarly movie.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cosgrove revealed that the screenplay for the iCarly movie was “being written, which is really exciting. And it looks like it’s happening. I’m really excited.” The upcoming feature-length continuation is expected to conclude any unresolved storylines from the 2021 revival series, such as the long-awaited return of Carly and Spencer’s absent mother, who appeared, albeit off-screen, in the closing moments of the revival’s Season 3 finale.

The original plan was for this shocking cliffhanger to be resolved in the next season’s premiere episode, but when Paramount+ canceled iCarly in October 2023, it looked like fans would never learn more about why Carly and Spencer’s mother abandoned them. Luckily, a movie continuation was teased by Cosgrove in 2024, who confirmed that there was “something in the works” that would make fans “super excited.”

Cosgrove confirmed to EW that the iCarly movie will fully introduce her character’s Mom, although an actor has yet to be cast in the role. “We don’t know who’s going to play the mom character yet, but she’s going to be a big part of the movie,” the actor shared. “That’s exciting. We’re just excited to start it and actually film.”

iCarly Was 1 of Nickelodeon’s Biggest Shows

Created by Dan Schneider, the original iCarly aired on Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2012, running for six seasons and 97 episodes. Cosgrove led the teen sitcom as Carly Shaw, who creates and hosts her own web show called iCarly with her two best friends, Sam (Jennette McCurdy) and Freddie (Nathan Kress), in the loft of her older brother Spencer’s (Jerry Trainor) apartment. iCarly was a huge hit for Nickelodeon, earning five Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children’s Program and consistently ranking as one of the channel’s most-watched shows.

Following the conclusion of iCarly, a joint spinoff with Victorious, following McCurdy’s Sam from the former and Ariana Grande’s Cat from the latter, was announced. Unfortunately, the spinoff, Sam & Cat, was short-lived, ending after just one season due to both actors being ready to move on to other projects. Sam & Cat would mark the last time that fans saw McCurdy’s Sam, as the actor chose not to return for the iCarly revival, as she had retired from acting in the interim.

The revival series premiered on Paramount+ in 2021 and ran for three seasons and 33 episodes until 2023. The new iCarly was aimed at the audience that grew up with the original show, which allowed for the revival to cover more adult topics. Cosgrove, Trainor, and Kress reprised their roles from the original series as Carly, Spencer, and Freddie, with Laci Mosley and Jaidyn Triplett joining the cast as new characters Harper Bettencourt and Millicent Mitchell, respectively.

Both the original and revival series of iCarly are available to stream on Paramount+.
