Local Governing Ministry reviews with UN managing waste in Libya

The Ministry of Local Governing held discussions on waste management in Libya with the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The meeting saw a discussion on a number of joint initiatives to support and develop the capacities of municipalities in the fields of environmental management and urban planning. The attendees agreed to implement steps to enhance the technical and administrative skills of local cadres. 

In addition, 75 trainees who participated in a training program on waste management using the “Wact” application, which specialises in calculating waste components, were honored in appreciation of their efforts and contributions to developing practical and theoretical skills in this field.

The attendees also discussed the policies and laws related to waste management in Libya, with a comparison between the local legal framework and its counterparts in Egypt and Tunisia, highlighting the importance of improving environmental legislation in line with local and international challenges.

The Ministry referred to the agreement to organize a field visit during the first quarter of 2025 to study regional experiences in waste management, with a proposal to benefit from Morocco’s experience in this field, in a way that contributes to achieving sustainable development and improving the quality of services provided to citizens.
