Enrolments in GenAI courses double to 2.6 million in India
With a rapidly growing learner base now exceeding 31 million, India has surpassed Europe in total learner numbers on Coursera.
As the demand for AI and Generative AI shoots up significantly, enrolments into Generative AI courses have more than doubled, taking the total number of enrolments to 2.6 million, according to a skills report by edtech company Coursera Inc.
However, only 30 per cent of GenAI learners are women, compared to 40 per cent of overall Coursera enrolments, indicating a gender gap in emerging tech adoption.
The Global Skills Report stated that there was a 107 per cent year-over-year (y-o-y) surge in Generative AI (GenAI) enrolments in India, the highest among all countries globally. It draws on data from Coursera’s 170 million learners between March 2024 and February 2025, identifying key skills across more than 100 countries in six regions.
With a rapidly growing learner base now exceeding 31 million, India has also surpassed Europe in total learner numbers on Coursera, highlighting its deepening commitment to digital transformation and job-relevant education.
Based on insights from Coursera’s global community of over 170 million learners, the report tracks emerging skill trends across more than 100 countries.
The seventh edition of the report ranks India 89th globally for overall skills proficiency and 19th in the Asia-Pacific region.
“Indian learners demonstrate 18 per cent proficiency in business, 22 per cent in technology and 20 per cent in data science. The report also introduces a new AI Maturity Index, where India ranks mid-tier (46), signalling a growing but uneven ecosystem for AI innovation and talent development,” it said.
Enrolments in professional certificates grew by 23 per cent year on year, alongside rising demand for employer-prioritised skills such as AI/ML (over 84 per cent), customer service ( over 41 per cent), and curiosity (over 32 per cent).
“India’s digital and AI ambition is clearly reflected in both national policies and learner behaviour,” Prashasti Rastogi, Director – Coursera for Campus and Coursera for Government, India, said.
Professional Certificate enrolments grew 23 per cent y-o-y to 3.3 million, indicating strong demand for job-relevant credentials. However, only 26 per cent of these enrolments are from women, pointing to an opportunity for more inclusive participation.
More than half of Coursera learners in India (52 per cent) access the platform via mobile devices, reflecting the country’s strong digital adoption and increasing access to flexible, self-paced learning.
Indian learners are prioritising full-stack development and DevOps skills, with strong demand for web development, application lifecycle management, and containerisation — reflecting a clear focus on software engineering and scalable tech infrastructure, the report said.
