Citigroup has appointed Guillermo Baygual, a former JPMorgan Chase & Co. executive, to co-lead its mergers and acquisitions division.

Baygual’s recruitment is part of a series of strategic hires from a key industry rival, a report from Bloomberg said.

An internal memo revealed that Baygual will work alongside Drago Rajkovic, another ex-JPMorgan executive who joined Citigroup in June.

The confirmation of the memo’s accuracy came from a Citigroup spokesperson.

With a career at JPMorgan that spans over 25 years, Baygual has held various senior positions, including the role of global co-head of the infrastructure and strategic investors group.

His transition to Citigroup is a continuation of the bank’s efforts to strengthen its investment banking sector, particularly under the guidance of Vis Raghavan, a former JPMorgan executive who moved to Citigroup in 2024, the report added.

Baygual and Rajkovic are set to start their new roles at Citigroup in September, with Baygual based in London and Rajkovic dividing his time between New York and San Francisco.

Until their arrival, Kevin Cox will remain in charge of Citigroup’s M&A business, after which he will take on the position of global chair of M&A, the news publication said.

Citigroup has been actively recruiting top-tier talent, as evidenced by the hires of Ed Sankey from HSBC Holdings and Achintya Mangla, another JPMorgan alumnus.

The bank involved in major deals this year, including the acquisition of Walgreens Boots Alliance by Sycamore Partners and the Charter Communications and Cox Communications merger.

Moreover, Citigroup is looking to expand its presence in Asia, as indicated by a Reuters report last month, which stated that the bank plans to grow its investment banking team in Japan by 10% to 15% in the coming year and is also pursuing new hires in Australia.
