Forgotten Tim Burton Film Tops Netflix Streaming Chart

Netflix’s No. 1 movie is an eight-year-old Tim Burton flick that has been slept on – Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The 2016 film directed by Burton and written by Jane Goldman is the most-watched movie on Netflix currently, having hit the streamer at the beginning of October, reports ShortList. According to Flixpatrol statistics, the movie has hit the top spot without cracking the U.S. top 10.

The success of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children since coming to Netflix, may be in part due to the box office success that is the recent Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, also directed by Burton. The latter has grossed more than $400 million globally.

Based on a novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children can be likened to Tim Burton’s version of Marvel’s X-Men. In the movie, Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) runs a home for children who have paranormal abilities and are known as “Peculiars.” The character Jake (Asa Butterfield), who knows of the home through stories from his grandfather, Abe, makes his way there and tries to keep the children safe.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children has 64% critic score and a 60% audience score and had a worldwide box office gross of $295.1 in 2016. The movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, Allison Janney, Chris O’Dowd and Ella Purnell (Fallout).

Burton is tied to Netflix through the show Wednesday, which he executive produces. The streamer recently revealed a teaser video for Season 2 of the series, which is expected to premiere in 2025. Wednesday has been a huge success for Netflix and, almost two years after it premiered, is still on Netflix’s Most Popular TV list.

Tim Burton Finds Success With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, this year’s sequel to Burton’s 1988 Beetlejuice, is set to be released on digital starting Oct. 8.The fantasy horror-comedy is currently available to pre-order on many platforms. Fandango At Home is offering a bundle that will enable fans to have both Beetlejuice films and an exclusive digital poster. A version of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be available in American Sign Language (ASL) on digital on Nov. 1.

The physical 4K UHD Blu-ray and DVD comes out Nov. 19 in stores and at online retailers. Also in the works is an eight-movie Burton collection that will be available from Warner Bros. via digital and 4K. The set will have featurettes, commentary, and a behind-the-scenes look at the famous Betelgeuse portrayed by Michael Keaton.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has become one of Burton’s highest-grossing films and had the third-highest-earning opening weekend of 2024. It is also Burton’s third-highest-earning film ever, domestically. The sequel is just behind 1989’s Batman and 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, which domestically grossed $251 million and $334 million respectively. Alice in Wonderland grossed more than $1 billion globally.
