1. King Fahd International Airport (DMM)

King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, holds the title of the largest airport in the world by area, covering an astonishing 776 square kilometers. Named after King Fahd Abdulaziz al-Saudi, the airport has been operating since 1999.

Despite being the world’s largest by far, King Fahd International Airport holds relatively less passenger capacity compared to other Saudi Arabia’s main airports. AFAR mentions that DMM accommodates around 10 million passengers per year.

2. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)

A pivotal aviation hub in Southeast Asia, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometers. The airport was opened in 1998 and has served millions of passengers ever since. 

More precisely, KUL can handle up to 100 million passengers every year. In 2022 itself, there were an estimated number of 24 million people, making it the busiest airport in Malaysia.

Furthermore, KUL was listed among the world’s most Instagrammable airports in 2024, beating Singapore’s most celebrated Changi Airport.

3. Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX)

In 2023, Beijing Daxing International Airport accommodated over 39.4 million passengers, Xinhua reported, thanks to its massive size. Completed in 2019, the airport occupies a land area of 46.6 square kilometers.

Furthermore, PKX has one of the largest single-building terminals in the world. According to AFAR, the terminal measures up to over 690,000 square meters in size.

4. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)

Shanghai Pudong International Airport spans about 39.9 square kilometers. Such an impressive size allows the airport to handle a tremendous amount of passengers.

OAG reports that as of October 2024, PVG saw over 4.2 million seats, making it one of the busiest airports in the world by seats.

5. Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi International Airport is another Southeast Asian airport making it onto our list. It boasts an incredible size, covering 32.4 square kilometers, according to the World Population Review.

This Bangkok’s primary international gateway can serve more than 60 million passengers each year, as well as accommodating over 300,000 aircraft movements.

6. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

Forbes India notes that Indira holds the capacity of more than 72 million fliers per year, making it one of the busiest airports across the globe by passenger traffic. This airport also emerges among Asia’s largest airports.

Located 16 km from the heart of New Delhi, IGI Airport spreads over an area of 5,106 acres, or equivalent to around 21 square kilometers, as quoted from JSW Steel. Furthermore, the airport functions as the key hub for many Indian airlines, such as IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet.

7. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

Last but not least, Hong Kong International Airport deserves a spot among the largest airports in Asia, spreading approximately an area of 19 square kilometers. Completed in 1998, this airport is unique as it stands on a mostly reclaimed island called Chek Lap Kok.

HKG also ranks well among the busiest international airports in the world. As of October 2024, this airport has a total area of around 3 million seats, which accounts for a 1.4% increase from the previous year, OAG reports.

In addition, along with Shanghai and Beijing, HKG also boasts one of the largest terminals in the world. The airport serves as the main hub for several airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, and Hong Kong Express Airways.
