Promising Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur delivered a stellar performance on home soil, clinching gold in the men’s 200m at the World Continental Tour Bronze meet on Sunday.

Kujur, who had expressed his intent to “gain home advantage” ahead of the competition, stayed true to his word, clocking 20.77 seconds to finish ahead of KO Seunghwan of Korea (20.95s) and compatriot Raguk Kumar G (21.17s).

Eye on World Championships qualification

While his winning time was short of the automatic qualification mark of 20.16 seconds for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan, the victory adds crucial ranking points in his bid for a spot. Kujur currently holds the national record in the event at 20.32 seconds and is ranked 42nd in the world — a position just inside the top 48 who will qualify.

“This win is important for my rankings,” he had noted earlier, stressing the significance of competing at home in front of a supportive crowd. The qualification deadline is approaching fast, making this result a timely boost.

Sreeshankar and Annu continue fine form

In other standout performances, long jumper M. Sreeshankar, competing in his comeback season after knee surgery, impressed with a season-best leap in his final attempt. Having already crossed the 8m mark thrice during the competition, he underlined his affinity for the Bhubaneswar track, where he had camped for a week before the meet.

Meanwhile, javelin thrower Annu Rani maintained her strong form, launching the spear to 62.01m for victory. Starting with 52.74m, she reached her winning mark on her fourth throw, once again surpassing 61m after a season-best 62.59m in Poland last week.
