Anthony Sapienza to be honored for decades of civic leadership

Anthony R. Sapienza will be honored at this year’s Roger Valcourt Outstanding Citizen Award Dinner on Sept. 10.

According to a community announcement, the event will take place at Century House in Acushnet. Sapienza is recognized for his significant contributions to the men’s apparel industry and his commitment to the SouthCoast community. The dinner is set to begin with registration at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and a formal program at 6:30 p.m.

Sapienza has over 40 years of experience in the apparel industry, most recently serving as president and CEO of JA Apparel Corp. Under his leadership, the Joseph Abboud brand saw substantial growth, culminating in its acquisition by The Men’s Wearhouse for $95 million in 2013. His extensive background includes key roles at Joseph Abboud Manufacturing Corp. in New Bedford, as well as leadership positions at Southwick/Grieco Bros., GFT USA Corp, and Joseph J. Pietrafesa Corp. He has managed operations for well-known labels such as Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, and Polo.

Beyond his business achievements, Sapienza has shown a strong commitment to civic engagement. He is currently the president of the board of the New Bedford Economic Development Council and has served on various nonprofit and educational boards, including the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Bristol Community College. He has also led initiatives focused on workforce development through the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board and the Mass Jobs Council.

His dedication to the community has earned him numerous accolades, including the SouthCoast Chamber’s Community Leadership Award and the SouthCoast Media Group’s Businessperson of the Year.

Sapienza holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Urban Affairs from Boston University. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves and continues to volunteer in the community. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, skiing, sailing, and reading.

Organizations and individuals are encouraged to attend the Roger Valcourt Memorial Dinner to honor Sapienza and his achievements. Tickets are priced at $75 per person and can be purchased at onesouthcoast.com.
