Bhakra-Nangal railway service: History
The Bhakra-Nangal railway service was established in 1948 when there was no route to travel between Nangal and Bhakra during the construction of the Bhakra Nangal Dam, and a special railway was needed. Consequently, it was decided to construct a railway track along the route to simplify the transport of both heavy machinery and people, according to Indian rail info. Notably, the readers must note that the train service is not managed by the Indian Railways.
Bhakra-Nangal railway service: Schedule and Route
The Bhakra-Nangal railway service was originally powered by steam engines, but in 1953, three modern engines were acquired from America to modernize them. Every day at 7.05 AM, the train departs Nangal Railway Station and arrives in Bhakra at 8.20 AM. In its return journey, the train departs Nangal at 3.05 PM. for another trip, dropping passengers off at Bhakra Railway at 4.20 PM.
The Bhakra-Nangal railway service, which now celebrates its 75 years, has seen the train help passengers nearly every day without fail. The train traverses 27.3 km to-and-fro over its 30-minute trip through the scenic Shivaliks, two horse-shoe shaped tunnels and a 158.5-m high rail-cum-road bridge.
Over the 75 years of the train journey, it has helped many a families including men, women and often their goats reach their destinations on time. The train has come to hold a special place in the hearts of those who have used it for their daily travel for the last 75 years.
