Barbarian (2022)
Original SR Image by Yailin Chacon
Now is the perfect time to give 2022’s Barbarian a watch because the director’s follow-up film, Weapons, is currently in theaters and is already being talked about as a modern horror classic. Barbarian offers a look at what to expect from Zach Cregger in his solo screenwriting and directorial debut.
Without giving too much away, Barbarian sees a woman (Georgina Campbell) arrive at an Airbnb only to find a man (Bill Skarsgård) is already occupying it. They agree to split the house for their stay, only to find some truly unsettling things in the basement.
This is a movie where you never know what’s coming next. The first act concludes with a bang and then you’re thrown into what seems like a totally different story, only for it to come together and get more harrowing. This is perfect for anyone who wants to watch a chilling movie in the dark.

KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
Every year, it seems like Netflix puts out a movie that becomes a huge hit and gets talked about everywhere. In 2025, that film is the record-breaking Kpop Demon Hunters, from Sony Pictures Animation, which takes the popularity of K-pop music and blends it with a heartfelt adventure story.
The story centers on a K-pop girl group called Huntr/x, who are also a trio of demon hunters, as they battle with a rival male K-pop group who are secretly demons. There’s added conflict given a secret one of the girls is hiding from her bandmates.
While the bond between the girls is the heart of the film, Kpop Demon Hunters is memorable for so many other reasons. The soundtrack is incredible and has become a hit on Spotify, the animation is gorgeous, and the action sequences are breathtaking. The success of the film is spawning sequels, a live-action adaptation, a TV show, and more.

Past Lives (2023)
The film listed here to be the least well-known is Past Lives but it should be on more people’s radars. The touching romantic drama is from writer/director Celine Song, who followed it up with Materialists this year, which was met with widespread acclaim.
As well-received as Materialists was, Past Lives is even better. The movie holds an outstanding 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was nominated for five Golden Globes, and was up for two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Though it was overlooked by many, it was still a moderate box office success too.
The story of Past Lives follows two childhood friends who grew up inseparable in South Korea until the girl’s family moves to Canada and they lose contact. They find each other as adults 24 years later, and their spark reignites, but there are complications given that she’s married. It’s highly emotional and heartbreaking at times, making it a must-see film.
2
Parasite (2019)
You seemingly couldn’t go anywhere in the back half of 2019 without hearing about Parasite. The South Korean film was a big deal thanks to the acclaim it received upon release but then went on to make all sorts of history at the Oscars in early 2020.
Parasite won Best Picture (the first non-English language movie to do so), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. On top of that, Bong Joon Ho’s modern classic also took home the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
The movie centers on a poor family that manages to infiltrate a wealthy family’s lives by taking on different jobs for them. While the premise on its own might sound plain, the execution is flawless and there are shocking twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, culminating in a tremendous climax.
1
Jurassic Park (1993)
There aren’t many movies in Hollywood history bigger than Jurassic Park. The billion-dollar hit spawned a franchise that’s still putting out films today and its visual effects are better than a lot of things released in the decades since.
The best thing about Jurassic Park though, is that it holds up remarkably well from all angles. The aforementioned visual effects are one thing but the iconic score, the awe of seeing the dinosaurs, and the thrilling scenes as the characters look to avoid danger are still fantastic to watch today.
Even if you’re someone who is no longer interested in the franchise, there’s no denying the fun of rewatching the original Jurassic Park to this day. It makes for the perfect film to enjoy once again from the comfort of your own home on Netflix. The T-Rex scene remains special and Steven Speilberg has never been better.
