Shippensburg football to play at Memorial Park for one last season
A delay in the installation of lights at Shippensburg High School’s refurbished stadium has led the Greyhounds’ football team back to familiar ground for one more season.
On Aug. 11, the Shippensburg Area School District board approved by an 8-0 vote the use of Veterans Memorial Field at Shippensburg Memorial Park for the Greyhounds’ five Friday night home football games during the 2025 season, starting with the season opener against Big Spring on Aug. 22.
Shippensburg has played its home varsity football games at Memorial Park since 1955, according to district superintendent Bill August.
The delay in the installation of lights at the high school was first announced by August in social media posts on Facebook and X on July 25:
Three days later, in another social media post on Facebook and X, August announced that a formal request to hold varsity football games at Veterans Memorial Field had been made to the Shippensburg Community Parks and Recreation Authority:
An additional post was made by school board president Steph Eberly to the Shippensburg Area School District Facebook page on Aug. 4, explaining the overall situation:
Other Shippensburg High fall sports events, including JV football, will be played at the school’s stadium during daytime hours. August said that was not taken into serious consideration for varsity games during an interview last week.
“Friday night lights is pretty special, so I don’t know if we would look at a daytime game as a positive,” August said.
There is a possibility that the lights could be installed at Shippensburg’s stadium before the Greyhounds’ final home game Oct. 17 against Northern York.
“There is some hope we would be able to get the work done by that last game, which would be ideal and something special for them,” August said.
