New mosaic mural welcomes travelers at Fresno Yosemite International Airport

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Travelers heading to Fresno Yosemite International Airport will now be greeted by a vibrant new artwork in the airport’s parking garage.

The mixed media mosaic mural, titled “We Have Arrived,” was created by acclaimed artist Caleb Duarte.

Selected through a statewide Call to Artists led by the Fresno Arts Council and the California Arts Council, the mural reflects the cultural diversity and spirit of California’s Central Valley.

Duarte’s design features a painted ceramic central figure inspired by Afro-Indigenous and Latinx futurisms, forming an abstract tree with roots grounded in the region’s mountains and forests.

Decorative floating patterns represent flight, drawing inspiration from the airport’s 1960s mosaic that adorns the exterior terminal building.

The piece is meant to offer a welcoming and dynamic experience for visitors while celebrating Fresno’s cultural renaissance.

“It has been a great honor to create this ceramic mural,” Duarte said. “We Have Arrived reflects Fresno’s unique cultural renaissance, representing belonging, imagination and flight offering a renewed sense of home and place.”

Duarte is an internationally recognized artist whose work has been exhibited around the world, including in India, Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Germany and Italy.

He also mentors students and serves as a tenured professor of sculpture at Fresno City College.

Lillia G. Chavez, executive director of the Fresno Arts Council, praised the mural, saying it beautifully honors the heritage of the Valley while enhancing the airport experience.

The installation is part of the airport’s multi-year FAT Forward terminal expansion, a program envisioned by the late Director of Aviation Henry L. Thompson to integrate public art into the travel experience.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport is one of the largest drivers of economic activity in the Central San Joaquin Valley, offering nonstop flights to cities across the U.S. and Mexico.
