Azerbaijani representative elected member to UN CERF Advisory Group
Elmaddin Mehdiyev, the head of the Azerbaijan International Development Assistance Agency (AIDA) operating under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been appointed a member of the Advisory Group of the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). E. Mehdiyev’s candidacy was officially nominated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.
In addition to Azerbaijan, candidates from Canada, Ivory Coast, Denmark, Gambia, Germany, the Netherlands, Niger, Norway, Qatar, South Africa and Sweden have become members of the Advisory Group, upon the appointment of the UN Secretary-General. The Advisory Group, consisting of a total of 23 members appointed for a period of 3 years and meeting twice a year, provides relevant recommendations to the UN Secretary-General on humanitarian activities, including the work of CERF.
CERF, operating under the leadership of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, is one of the main UN agencies that directly organizes the provision of emergency financial assistance to eliminate the consequences caused by humanitarian crises in various regions of the world.
The appointment of an Azerbaijani representative to the aforementioned organization is an indication of the success of country’s donor activities and their recognition by the international community.
