VIDEO: Ice cream and ragtime music delivers double scoop at Carson City’s Foreman-Roberts House Park
Ragtime jazz and ice cream made for a delicious pairing Saturday afternoon at the Foreman-Roberts House Park and Carriage House in Carson City. With a delightful nod to tradition and a generous helping of community spirit, the Carson City Historical Society presented the double feature as part of its annual Ice Cream Social, which was conveniently tied into the second day of the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival.
Featuring the Carson City Ragtime Band, the sweetness unfolded both indoors in the Carriage House and outdoors as CCHS hosts Donna McLaren and Chrissy Charbonneau served up dishes of ice cream to the packed, all-ages crowd under sunny skies and not-so-hot temperatures.

The beautifully preserved Foreman-Roberts House, located at 1207 North Carson Street, offers visitors a glimpse into Carson City’s Rich past. The family-friendly gathering was an annual fundraiser for the Carson City Historical Society, which helps to preserve and share the city’s community history for generations. A festival favorite is the annual Basie’s Birthday concert by the Mile High Jazz Band. This year the band will be joined by its regular vocalist, Jakki Ford, and guest vocalists Dale Head and Millie Bratsch. The event is on Thursday, August 21 — the 121st anniversary of the birth of the great band-leader William “Count” Basie — from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McFadden Plaza stage.
For the first time, Darrell and the Darrell-Licks bring their folk music, stories, and smiles to Jazz and Beyond. Other performers are the Retro Radio Dolls, Dom & Friends, New World Jazz Project, the Bepop Revival featuring Monique De Haviland, Cherie & John and Take This, RoseBud’s Dance Band, Lucky Diamond and the Incontinentals, Impromptu, Jazz Catz, Carolyn Dolan Band, and lots more.
The festival wraps up on Sunday, August 24, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., with the high-energy, Latin-jazz ensemble No Comprende on the McFadden Plaza Stage. For a detailed schedule of events and printable calendar, see jazzcarsoncity.com.
