James Gunn Just Moved a Major DCU Movie Up The Production Schedule

Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn gives fans a major update on his next film featuring the Man of Steel.

Per Variety, Gunn confirmed that the studio is “scheduling it now” when asked about a follow-up to the recently released Superman feature film starring David Corenswet. “I’m totally done with the treatment,” Gunn stated. “My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.”

Gunn also noted that, while Superman may have broken new ground for the wider DCU, it is in no way setting the overall tone of the franchise going forward. “Clayface is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do,” Gunn explained. “There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman. The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. … We don’t want people being bored.”

Superman soared into theaters everywhere on July 11 to the delight of critics and audiences alike. The film introduced David Corenswet’s Man of Steel to the DCU, along with a whole host of other superpowered figures, ranging from Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern to Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific to Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl. The latter of these superpowered stars, despite only appearing in a brief post-credits cameo sequence, will lead her own feature film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, in 2026. This film is currently slated to arrive in theaters just three months ahead of Clayface’s highly anticipated film debut in September 2026.

The next major release for the DCU is the second season of HBO’s Peacemaker starring John Cena. The series’ second season will bring back numerous fan favorites from Season 1, including Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, also known as Vigilante, Danielle Brooks as Project Butterfly member Leota Adebayo, and Steve Agee as A.R.G.U.S. agents Emilia Harcourt and John Economos. While specific plot details about Peacemaker Season 2 remain tightly under wraps, Gunn has already explicitly warned fans that if they “watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen” going forward in the DCU, implying that it will have profound implications for the overarching cinematic universe as a whole.
