IndiGo glitch disrupts flights across India

IndiGo Airlines faced major disruptions at airports across India on Saturday due to a technical glitch in their systems. The glitch caused long queues and frustrated passengers, particularly at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The issues started around 12:30 PM, leading to significant delays.

By 1:30 PM, IndiGo announced a “temporary system slowdown” across its entire network. This resulted in long lines and unhappy travelers. Passengers quickly shared their frustrations on social media.

They posted images of the crowded airport and criticized the airline for the delays. Many were unable to book tickets on IndiGo’s website as the technical problems continued. The timing of the disruption was especially bad, as many passengers were trying to travel during the festive season.

Some had booked their tickets in advance, only to face unexpected delays at the airport. “Booked a last-minute flight because I desperately needed to get home ASAP—only for the servers to crash and the flight to be delayed. Now, instead of zooming through the skies, I’m stuck in an airport purgatory where the only thing flying is my patience… out the window.

#indigo,” one frustrated traveler tweeted. Others compared the chaotic airport scenes to busy railway stations. “Technical glitch at @IndiGo6E Airport looks like a railway station.

#indigo #monopoly #delays,” another user remarked.

Several passengers called on the airline to improve its ground services.

One user commented, “@IndiGo6E it’s good to invest in new aircrafts but how about improving the ground services! This is the scene at Indigo counters at Bangalore T1 for last one hour. Additional counters are required, disturbing to see old people suffering. @DGCAIndia please notice.”

IndiGo released a statement acknowledging the “major technical glitch” affecting its operations.

The airline said its staff was working hard to help travelers at the airports and restore normal operations as soon as possible. “We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and patience during this time,” IndiGo posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The glitch impacted everything from online bookings to check-ins.

According to flight tracking website Flight Aware, IndiGo had the highest number of delayed flights globally on Saturday, with 889 of nearly 9,900 flights running behind schedule. Major airports like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai were especially affected. An official at Delhi Airport said that during the full outage, check-ins had to be done manually for passengers with baggage to drop off.

The airline also informed customers on social media that its booking and web check-in services were down until at least 9:45 pm. Despite requests, an IndiGo representative did not comment on the cause of the disruption. The ongoing festival season, with Dussehra set to be celebrated next week, further complicated the situation.

Airport officials reported disruptions across all services, including the website, online booking, check-in processes, boarding pass issuance, baggage drop, flight operations and scheduling. In its most recent quarterly results, for the period ending in June, IndiGo reported its first profit decline in two years due to higher operating costs, even as fares remained largely unchanged. Despite this, the airline has been among the most profitable in the sector, earning $326 million in the June quarter.
