Scouting project is making music | News, Sports, Jobs

HOWLAND — Scout Philip Rullo, who is a senior at Howland High School, has completed a special project for A Sense of Wonder Preschool and Daycare, which he attended when he was a preschooler.

Philip, 17, a member of Troop 28 / 122, said he was searching for an Eagle Scout project to complete and he was in contact with Shelly Cole-Monley, administrator / owner of the preschool, who was trying to get a music wall installed on the playground for the children ages 2 to 5 who attend the day care.

“I went here when I was younger and after speaking with her, I agreed to this project. I began collecting donations of items from throughout the community and a pallet for the project,” Philip said.

The main structure of the music wall is a 10-foot pallet that is covered with pans, pots and other donated items that children can tap and make a noise.

“I researched music walls that you can buy and after getting many donations I was able to create my own,” Philip said.

He said it took time to get the music wall together as he first had to get the donations of items for the wall.

Philip, who has been in scouting since first grade, said he has seen how children like to make sounds from the different items using large metal spoons that are removable from the wall.

“You can see their responses to the sounds they make,” he said.

Cole-Monley said ever since the music wall was built, the children love to go over to it and make different sounds.

Philip, who is the son of Philip and Jessica Rullo, said he wanted to get his Eagle Scout project completed before the start of his senior year in high school because he will be busy.

Scouts have until they turn 18 to complete an Eagle Scout project. Philip said he plans to attend college to study pre-med.

He said he also received monetary donations for his project, including from Dr. Jeff Lafuria.

Cole-Monley said she and the children like the music wall addition.

“The music walls in the catalogs are expensive. I am glad to have one that was made from recycled materials. The children like hearing their voices echoed through the tubes” she said.
