Tanzania, India cherish ties in health, education, trade, defense sectors   

DAR ES SALAAM: THE relationship between Tanzania and India in various areas, including health, water, education, defense, infrastructure, trade, and international diplomacy, has continued to be strong and stead,y benefiting both countries.

Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Pindi Chana, made the statement during the celebration of India’s 79th Anniversary of Independence held in Dar es Salaam, where she said that the cooperation between the two countries is going well and that pleases her.

Mentioning the various areas of cooperation she mentioned their participation in the joint Africa India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) exercise that took place from April 13–18, 2025, which involved the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), the Indian Navy Command, along with nine partner countries, to combat threats of piracy, including human trafficking, illegal arms trade, and drug trafficking.

Moreover, she said that India has provided over 1.1bn/ US dollars in Line of Credit (LOC) to Tanzania for various water projects.

Additionally, Minister Chana noted that India donated 10 ambulances to the Ministry of Health in the country, which were handed over on October 4, 2023.

Tanzania and India have enjoyed traditionally close, friendly, and cooperative relations. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the political relationship involved shared commitments to anti-colonialism, non-alignment, as well as South-South Cooperation and close cooperation in international fora.

In recent years, India-Tanzania ties have evolved into a modern and pragmatic relationship with sound political understanding, diversified economic engagement, people-to-people contacts in the field of education and healthcare, and development partnership in capacity building training, concessional credit lines, and grant projects.

The High Commission of India in Dar es Salaam has been operating since November 19, 1961, and the Consulate General of India in Zanzibar was set up on October 23, 1974.
