Shillong, Aug 19: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) celebrated World Photography Day with a Landscape Photography and Reel Making Competition, organised in collaboration with Nikon India.
The event showcased the creativity of budding photographers and storytellers while offering industry insights from seasoned professionals.
The day began with students exploring the USTM campus in the morning drizzle, capturing landscapes and nature in frames that reflected both artistic vision and technical skill. Their works highlighted the power of photography to turn fleeting moments into lasting impressions.

The formal programme at the NKC Auditorium opened with a welcome address and the felicitation of guests, followed by a keynote lecture from Tarun Siwach, Senior Manager–Technical, Nikon India, who spoke on the evolving trends and possibilities in photography.
A panel discussion, “Framing the Truth”, featured journalist Pankaj Saikia, who emphasised the emotional and social impact of photography. “Photography is more than just capturing moments; it’s about telling stories, evoking emotions, and preserving memories. A single frame can convey the depth of human experience, spark empathy, and inspire change,” he said.
Industry experts Partha Sarthi Baruah and Neeraj Phukan also shared their professional journeys, inspiring participants with practical insights and experiences from the field.
The celebration concluded with the prize distribution ceremony, where winners of the photography and reel competition were awarded cash prizes in recognition of their talent.
USTM reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation and creativity among students. With its NAAC ‘A’ Grade accreditation and a place in the 151–200 band of NIRF India Rankings 2024, the university continues to provide platforms that encourage holistic learning and excellence beyond classrooms.
