SETU students fly the music flag high at the Fleadh – News
This year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in the Model County was widely regarded as being one of the best ever with an eclectic line-up of world class musicians involved and among them were South East Technological University students from Waterford.
The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉīireann, organised this year by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in association with Wexford County Council, is the world’s largest celebration of Irish music, song, and dance, drawing in excess of 600,000 visitors to Wexford and the south east.

SETU had a stand at the event, located on the town’s quayfront, just a 10-minute walk from the university’s Summerhill campus in Wexford town.
A liaison team was on hand to answer course questions from prospective students during the event about the range of courses on offer at the university’s local campus and at its main campus in Waterford and Carlow.
However, the stand also served as a platform for SETU’s music students to showcase their talent in addition to interactive STEM demonstrations from CALMAST.
Students from the SETU’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music performed pop, folk, and traditional Irish songs for the crowd and the music group’s diverse set reflected the wide range of musical styles explored within the music degree at SETU’s campus in Waterford.

Niamh Lacey, SETU music graduate, said: “My time studying music at SETU has given me invaluable knowledge and skills that will stay with me for life.”
“Along the way, I have built lasting friendships and meaningful connections that continue to shape my journey,” said Niamh.
She said she was “truly honoured” to perform at the Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford, and took great pride in representing the music courses at SETU.

The degree spans a wide range of musical disciplines and allows students to explore multiple areas of interest.
Key components of the course include performance, composition, conducting, listening skills, and music technology. Students cover musical styles like classical, jazz, and Irish traditional music.
The degree also provides numerous performance opportunities, masterclasses, and collaborative projects that connect students with industry professionals and fellow musicians.
When speaking about the course, Niamh Lacey said: “Whether your interest lies in performing on stage, writing music, producing sound, or exploring global music traditions, the course provides the tools, mentorship, and inspiration to thrive.”
