‘Tired of repeating the same pattern’- The Week

In a conversation at the Manorama News Conclave, filmmaker Jeethu Joseph said he is going for a different approach with Drishyam 3, which sees Mohanlal returning as Georgekutty. He added that he envisioned that the events in the third film are those that happen “naturally” to Georgekutty’s family. “Audiences will get it when they see the film,” says Jeethu.

“It will be apparent to viewers that I did not do it for the money. In fact, I’ve conveyed the same to Antony (producer). There may arise a possibility for a fourth film, but I don’t have the idea with me yet,” he further added.

While reflecting on the conception of Drishyam 2, Jeethu said it was the film’s climax that came to him first. Drishyam 3, too, he implies, was conceived the same way. “While lunching with Lalettan after a screening of Drishyam 2, he asked me about the possibility of a third film. When I told him the climax I had in mind, he loved it,” recalled the director who made his debut in 2007 with Detective.

Speaking of detectives, Jeethu seems to have gotten exhaused with doing thrillers all the time. “I’m bored of doing films in the same pattern. If I go to Telugu cinema to do a ‘mass’ film, they ask for a climactic twist. If I pitch an idea for a Tamil movie, they ask for logic. They demand too much of me. I’m striving to change tracks. I may fail, but I want to change somehow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jeethu is looking forward to the release of his new thriller, Mirage, which reunites Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali for the 6th time after Kishkindha Kaandam.

It also marks Asif’s reunion with the director after their hit thriller Kooman, in which the actor played a police officer with a hidden personality.

Mirage would also mark Jeethu’s second film with Aparna after Mr and Ms Rowdy.

While details of the genre and remaining cast members are unclear, one hopes Mirage will be another unique and thrilling experience with interesting twists.

The screenplay of Mirage comes from the combined creative collaboration of Jeethu and Srinivas Abrol, who penned the Hindi thriller series Abhay starring Kunal Kemmu from a story by Aparna R. Tarakad.
