Center to advance hunting and conservation looks to tradition, science
MISSOULA, Mont. — The University of Montana is teaming up with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to launch the Center for Hunting and Conservation.
The initiative brings together wildlife biology, land management and ethics training to prepare a new generation of conservation-minded hunters and policy experts.
UM President Seth Bodnar said the center looks to introduce people to skills like marksmanship and how to prepare game. On top of that, students will look into research, policy advocacy and community engagement related to hunting and conservation.
The partnership will focus on data-driven management practices supporting both wildlife populations and rural economies.
“One of the things Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, they coined the phrase ‘Hunting is conservation,’” Bodnar told NBC Montana. “You want those efforts to be backed by science and backed by data, and that’s what this center is going to do.”
