Long-Awaited Action-Heavy Netflix Video Game Movie Gets Its Gears Moving

David Leitch’s Gears of War movie has finally had a new update that will certainly excite fans. In May 2025, it was announced that Fall Guy and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch had signed on to direct and co-produce the film adaptation of the popular video game with a screenplay by Dune’s Jon Spaihts. Netflix has been in development on the film since 2022, working with Gears of War‘s current developer, The Coalition.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick were asked about the prospect of Gears of War. McCormick said that the project is in active development and even though it won’t be able to be released in time for the upcoming game, Gears of War: E-Day, the property’s popularity is building momentum. She revealed that not only does it allow Leitch to put his own spin on a war movie, but also a big sci-fi blockbuster. McCormick said:

“We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it. There’s a lot of energy from [Gears of War company] The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.”

The Long Road to Bring ‘Gears of War’ to Life

Gears of War
Epic Games

Gears of War is one of the biggest video game franchises of all time, with the first game being released in November 2006 and quickly racking up records, including the fastest-selling video game of 2006, the second-most played game on Xbox Live during 2007, and eventually becoming one of the best-selling Xbox 360 games of all time. Attempts at a Gears of War movie emerged in March 2007, just four months after the release of the first game. New Line Pictures acquired the film rights and spent nearly three years working on the film, attaching Underworld director Len Wiseman to helm the movie.

In 2016, as Gears of War 4 was released, Coalition Games revealed that Universal Pictures had acquired the film rights to Gears of War. Shane Salerno, who wrote Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and was part of James Cameron’s group of writers to craft the four Avatar sequels, was hired to pen the script. The plan was to tell an original story set in the universe, similar to the current Fallout television series. Yet the project never gained traction with no director attached, and it appeared the rights lapsed, with Netflix acquiring them in 2022.

Given Leitch’s track record with R-rated violent action films like John Wick as well as big blockbuster franchises like Deadpool 2 and The Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, he seems like the right man to bring Gears of War to life. The only disappointment is that after twenty years of fans waiting to see Gears of War brought to life, the story’s epic scale won’t be on the big screen but instead on a television at home. Maybe KPop: Demon Hunters‘ number one opening weekend will get Netflix to change its tune.
