Philippines urges end to worsening Gaza humanitarian crisis
The Philippines has joined the international community on Monday in urgently calling for an end to “the ever-worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”
In a statement released on August 25, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed its deep concern over the Israeli government’s planned complete military takeover of Gaza, which severely restricts access to life-saving humanitarian aid such as food and water, and large-scale displacement.

“These developments aggravate an already dire humanitarian situation and further diminish prospects for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East,” the DFA said.
“The Philippines therefore strongly calls on Israel to heed the ceasefire proposal as a crucial step to protect civilians and revive the path to peace,” it added.
The DFA statement came three days after the United Nations officially declared Gaza in a state of famine, which the Israel government denied.
The famine was declared by experts at the Rome-based IPC, who said it affected 500,000 people in the Gaza governorate, which covers about a fifth of the Palestinian territory including Gaza City.
Israel this week doubled down on plans to launch a new offensive to capture the city, despite an international outcry, saying it would help bring about the defeat of Hamas.
The IPC projected that the famine would expand to Deir el-Balah and Khan Yunis governorates by the end of September, covering around two-thirds of Gaza.
UN agencies and aid groups have warned for months of a looming famine in Gaza, where Israel has severely restricted aid and at times completely cut it off during its nearly two-year war with militant group Hamas. – With Agence France Presse
