Japanese auto major Honda managed to overtake former partner and arch rival Hero MotoCoro in monthly sales in September 2024 for the first time, according to retail sales data available on the Vahan website.

Honda also continued its lead in the first 5 days of October with two-wheeler sales of 75,864 units, 10,353 units more than Hero’s 65,511 units.

While Honda managed to overtake HeroMotocorp in September sales, Hero MotoCorp continues to lead in terms of cumulative sales. Between 1 April and 5 October 2024, the company sold 24,52,502 two-wheelers. Honda managed to sell 22,73,423 units during this period.

In the wholesale segment also Hero MotoCorp was leading the market with despatches of 29,40,666 units between April and August 2024, whereas Honda managed to sell a total of 28,81,419 units during the period.

Data available with the Federation of Automotive Dealers Association (FADA), Honda, Hero MotoCorp and TVS were the leaders in the two-wheeler segment. Overall two-wheeler sales, however, saw a decline of 8.51 per cent on a, year-on-year basis.

The decline in sales is attributed to the slump in demand and deferred purchases due to the extended rains in several parts of the country.
