Engineering Admissions 2025: CS, AI/ML courses dominate despite IT slowdown concerns

Engineering colleges across India continue to see strong demand for Computer Science and AI/ML-related courses despite concerns over an IT slowdown.

As engineering colleges conclude their admission sessions, the fear of a slowdown in IT has not deterred the preference for Computer Science (CS) courses over other streams.

Speaking to businessline, educational institutions and analysts say that job placements and packages offered by the sector prompted more students to apply for CS and aligned courses in line with earlier years.

According to S. Sasikumar, Director of Admissions at Vellore Institute of Technology, the demand for CS has remained strong and continues to be high. “Speculation about an IT slowdown has had little impact, as IT companies continue to actively recruit students and application sales are at an all-time high,” he added.

SRMIST sees surge in AI/ML, data science

K. S. Lakshmi, Director of Admissions at SRMIST, stated that CS courses remain popular and sought after, especially with specialisations in AI/ML and data science, which have seen increased interest compared to previous years.

KN Subramanya, Principal of RV College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru, shared that any course with an AI/ML specialisation has seen increased demand due to better job opportunities across various sectors. Currently, RVCE has an intake of 180 students for Computer Science and Engineering with an AI specialisation.

Career consultant warns of overdependence on CS

However, Jayaprakash Gandhi, a career consultant, considers this trend a cause for concern.

“Parents and students continue to flock towards CS, expecting better employment and pay packages; however students, especially from rural backgrounds, are unaware of the slowdown and go by the placement rates offered by the college,” he said. According to his analysis of TN counselling sessions, computer science and ECE were the most preferred fields, with 55 per cent of the seats filled by students opting for CS and IT-related courses.

TN counselling data: CS, IT most popular

According to data from Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), over 75 per cent of the available engineering seats in the state were filled after the final round of counselling, a 10 percentage point increase compared to the same time last year.

Kiran Kumar Ravulakollu, Dean of the School of Engineering & Technology at Telangana-based MNR University, stated that they have seen a 54% increase in intake in AI/ML and data science specialisations over the last year.  The parents have directed their wards towards the AI specialisations, he added. He believes that tech start-ups and MNCs continue to need freshers.

Core engineering fields see green shoots

However, there are also signs of green shoots in core engineering disciplines, especially those incorporating AI specialisations. Electronics and Communication Engineering, as well as Biotech, are in high demand among Core Students, VIT’s Sasikumar said.

S.Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice Chancellor, SASTRA, noted that CS has retained its popularity among students but some have gravitated towards ECE and mechanical streams. Electronics Engineering in VLSI Design and Technology has been particularly sought after, he added.
