A  report, released by Nick Hayes on 23 October 2025, revealed that Indian movies have surpassed Australian films at the Australian box office in both audience numbers and overall revenue growth trends. And, it credits among others the Mind Blowing Films for this unprecedented surge.

In the Australian market share Indian movies are now third after USA and UK, while Australia has slipped to the number sixth position. So, Australia is the first country among the Anglophone countries where a non-English (Indian) movies have moved ahead of the local productions.

The study covers, Nick Hayes media briefing memo (23 Oct, 2025) says, 3,000 releases from January 2021 to August 2025.

  • Box Office Dominance: The report found that Indian films — including releases from Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood, and Mollywood — are regularly out grossing Australian productions at local cinemas. Titles like Kantara Chapter 1 and War 2 have drawn larger crowds and sustained runs compared to most domestic Australian releases.

  • Revenue Potential: The same report projected a $140 million growth potential for non-English films in Australia, largely attributed to the expanding South Asian diaspora and growing interest in Indian storytelling among non-Indian audiences.

  • Decline of Australian Production: Analysts highlighted that the Australian film industry has faced a steady decline in both the number of locally made films and attendance, despite government incentives. Meanwhile, Indian films have maintained strong engagement despite minimal marketing in Australia.

  • Diaspora Demand: A significant portion of box office earnings comes from Australia’s Indian community, which eagerly supports new releases across languages—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.

  • Cultural Crossover Appeal: Market observers note that compelling storytelling and universal themes in Indian cinema have begun resonating with wider Australian audiences, particularly younger viewers and multicultural filmgoers.

  • Festival Support and Distribution: The success of events like the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne run by CEO Mitu Bhowmick Lange of Mind Blowing Films and others have strengthened visibility and access to Indian films nationwide.

  • In sum, the report underscores a cultural and commercial shift in Australia’s cinema landscape, positioning Indian movies as the current box office leaders, surpassing local Australian productions in profitability and public reach.
