Creativity and culture are set to combine in a new bar-restaurant which has shared an idea of what to expect when it opens in North Tyneside next week. The Uncommon has been taking shape inside Harbour House in North Shields, which itself has just had its official opening.

And CGI images of the chic new venue show it will fit into the vibrant creative hub perfectly. As recently reported, Harbour House launched in the coastal town earlier this August, transforming the former Kasbah Furniture Market and indoor market area space in Little Bedford Street into a three-storey home for designers, makers and independent business such as the award-winning Northern Rye bakery; We Rise yoga studio and florist and stylist Muscari.

The Uncommon has forged a fashionable niche of its own in the building where from early September it will be serving up a carefully-styled menu of food, drink – including natural wines, craft ales and spicy margaritas – and live music. It says its bold interior has been inspired by fashion studios, ‘old-school club culture’ and brutalist textures with rough cream plaster featuring alongside dark-stained wood and contrasting with green leather booths and high stools in a restaurant space which will have room more than 100 diners.

The aim is to create an atmosphere ‘where guests can hold a proper conversation or discover a record they’ve never heard before’. And it is designed to accomodate a range of occasions too, from after-work drinks to late-night get-togethers.

Creative director Skye-Alexander Ferry, who with partner Amy-Bose Wilson is behind the seven-figure restoration project which has brought new life to the building and been named after their daugher Harbour, says the new addition is more than just another new bar-restaurant. He has teamed up on The Uncommon with Ali Platt – its director of hospitality – and over the past year they have been hands-on in its creation.

The boldness of the look they have created is being echoed in the food menu which is out to elevate the dining experience through inventive flavours, inspired combinations and vibrant presentation. The food is also designed to ‘complement the drinks and match the mood, moment and music’.

Music-wise, there will be opportunities for local talents and DJs to showcase their skills in the venue which will be open to creative expression from the likes of designers amd artists too. Skye-Alexander said of his latest venture: “This project has been a huge passion of mine.

“It’s not just an idea but something I’ve wanted to build and see come to life for many years now. The Uncommon is more than just a bar and restaurant: it’s a space we’ve created with real purpose, shaped by the places I’ve always loved visiting but never quite found in the North East. “

He added: “I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome everyone to see how they can use the space, make it their own and share everything we’ve been working so hard to build.” Ali, who most recently worked at Wylam Brewery, said: “After years of working across the hospitality and drinks industry, the chance to help build something from the ground up was too good to miss.

“I’ve poured a lot into this industry over the years but this feels different. It’s personal.

“I’m proud of what we’re creating here.” Following next week’s launch – the exact date of which has yet to be announced – The Uncommon will be open daily, except for Tuesday, from 10.30am until late, and midnight on Thursdays to Saturdays.
