Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett yesterday told CNBC that he’s not interested in adding another railroad to the company’s portfolio, which includes BNSF Railway Co.
Buffett told CNBC’s Becky Quirk that he and Berkshire CEO-designate Greg Abel met with CSX President and CEO Joseph Hinrichs in Omaha, Nebraska, on Aug. 3, and made it clear that they would not make a bid to acquire CSX. However, they believed they could cooperate more to gain some of the same benefits that would come from merging the two companies, CNBC reported.
Berkshire Hathaway acquired BNSF in 2010. Speculation over whether Berkshire would acquire CSX has been circulating after Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway revealed late last month that they are pursuing a merger to create the first single operator of a transcontinental railroad.
Last week, BNSF and CSX announced they’re offering several new joint intermodal service products designed to offer customers seamless, efficient, coast-to-coast solutions to ship between the western and eastern United States. After the announcement, a CSX spokesman said in an email that there was nothing more to the companies’ conversations than the launch of the new products.
Meanwhile, Canadian Pacific Kansas City today released a statement stressing the Class I “is not interested in participating in immediate rail industry consolidation, despite the suggestions by some that it take part.” CPKC also has been the subject of merger speculation reports since the UP-NS merger proposal was revealed.
“CPKC does not believe that further rail consolidation is necessary for the industry as currently structured,” the company stated. “The company remains focused on delivering more of the benefits and unique value-creating opportunities of its three-nation network, which connects shippers in all parts of North America via effective interline service options.”
CPKC was formed in 2023 when the U.S. Surface Transportation Board approved Canadian Pacific’s acquisition of Kansas City Southern and KCS de Mexico.
