Škoda Announces E20 Fuel Compatibility for Vehicles Sold from April 2020, ETAuto

On whether Škoda plans to offer a retrofit or repair kit to make older cars E20-compatible, the automaker said no such programme is under consideration at present.Škoda Auto India confirmed that all its petrol vehicles sold in the country from April 1, 2020, onwards are fully compatible with E20 fuel, a blend of 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol, which is being introduced as part of India’s clean fuel transition.

The company recently clarified on its official website that even if the fuel flap on some models specifies E5 or E10, the components of all BSVI-compliant Škoda petrol cars sold after April 2020 have been evaluated and are suitable for E20 usage. For these vehicles, the use of E20 fuel will not affect the standard warranty, though normal warranty guidelines will continue to apply.

What will happen to cars sold before April 2020?

For cars manufactured and sold before April 1, 2020, Škoda stated that components were not formally tested for E20 compatibility. However, based on government agency findings, the company noted that the use of E20 fuel is unlikely to have any significant impact on older models. Owners of such vehicles have been advised to refuel only at authorised fuel stations to avoid risks associated with adulterated petrol.

The company also clarified that while extended or part warranties will remain valid, any failures resulting from the violation of manufacturer guidelines — such as usage beyond recommended fuel standards — will not be supported.

India has been progressively increasing ethanol blending in petrol as part of its energy security and sustainability roadmap. E20 fuel is expected to help reduce vehicular emissions and cut dependence on fossil fuels.
