Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce are engaged; Sports Gossip Show listeners have questions
Please allow us to set a scene for you. It was a normal Tuesday at 1:22 pm. — Madeline and Charlotte, your co-hosts of “The Sports Gossip Show” — had just recorded one of our two weekly episodes.
We touched on a lot of fun stuff: Daniil Medvedev’s big racquet smash at the U.S. Open, a “cottage” that Bill Belichick is trying to sell on Nantucket, Tommy Fleetwood’s amazing PGA win at the Tour Championship, the fact that Tom Brady is very online and much more.
And then, the news we’ve been waiting for since 2023 dropped: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram.
We knew that there was only one thing to do: record an emergency episode.
We’ve never gotten more messages in the history of our show than right after that engagement announcement, so let’s answer some key questions.
(We did publish that original episode, so if you want a good gossip roundup, watch it here.)
Were the florals compressed?
We got this question from hundreds (not exaggerating) of listeners. If you don’t know what “compressed florals” are, that’s OK, because it’s a term we made up.
We coined the term last year when we noticed that the flowers at athletes’ weddings often all look the same. They’re mostly white and shoved in close together with some bits of greenery peeking out. Hence “compressed.” Some florists argue that we aren’t using the correct terminology, but others have told us that they like this new term and have started using it with their clients, so we are making a positive impact!
Whenever an athlete gets engaged, married or celebrates a baby, we analyze the flower arrangements. We even dedicated an entire episode to it a couple of months ago.
It’s truly an honor to give an official ruling on Kelce-Swift engagement flowers, and we are thrilled to report that they were not compressed.
The flowers Kelce went with were gorgeous. According to his father, Ed, Travis had the arrangements set up in his backyard and proposed there. Travis and his florist did a fantastic job — each flower had room to breathe, they weren’t all the same height and there was a nice mix of color and greenery. The arrangements looked as though they had grown there, which is the gold standard of florals, if you ask us: 10/10, no notes.
Why did Ed Kelce give the definitive interview detailing this massive event to an Australian radio station show called “The Jimmy & Nath Show with Emma”?
Honestly, no idea. Ed spilled the beans, though. He said that Travis stuck with tradition and called Taylor’s dad, Scott, to ask for permission before proposing. Ed also said that Travis was trying to come up with something big and special for the proposal, but both he and Scott told Travis to get it over with — just asking the question was special enough. So Travis did it in his backyard.
We love this. Nothing sweeter than an intimate, private, low-key proposal.
The reason he chose to share this massive amount of information with Australian radio remains a mystery. Almost certainly, Taylor’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine, approved it, so we’d love to know what the strategy was there (not that there’s anything wrong with it).
Ed also spoke to News 5, a local Cleveland station, which makes sense because he is from Ohio. If anyone can explain the Australia of it all, please email info@sportsgossipshow.com or DM us on Instagram @sportsgossip.
Does Kelce’s engagement put more pressure on the Chiefs to make it to the Super Bowl this year?
The engagement doesn’t, but if Swift ends up performing the halftime show at next year’s Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., it might.
When Swift went on “New Heights,” the podcast Kelce hosts with his brother (and former Eagles center) Jason Kelce, Swift dropped a lot of hints that she might be finally doing the halftime show.
At least, you’d pick up on the hints if you’re a Swiftie. To anyone else, it sounded like Taylor was talking about baking bread because she said she was particularly obsessed with sourdough lately, that she thinks about it 60 percent of the time and she kept repeating the number 47.
Translated for non-Swift fans: The San Francisco 49ers mascot is named Sourdough, it will be Super Bowl LX (60), and this stadium was the 47th stop on Taylor’s Eras Tour.
This is also Kelce’s 13th season in the NFL; 13 is famously Swift’s favorite number, so there’s a decent chance Taylor performs the halftime show.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the Chiefs were playing in it? No pressure!
However, as all of her enemies know, you’d be a fool to bet against anything associated with Swift. We’d put money on the Chiefs to be 2025-2026 champs. Call it the Taylor effect.
When will the wedding be?
Wouldn’t it be funny if we were the only people in the world who knew? We don’t. Except that it’s almost certainly going to be after the season. Being an NFL player means you’re on a grueling, regimented schedule. It can be hard to fit in a birthday party, let alone a wedding.
It’s worth noting that the only Saturday date that falls on the 13th of the month next year is in June.
