Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman and MD Mukesh Ambani today announced a new joint venture with Meta to develop and deliver open source AI models for Indian enterprises.

Speaking at the 48th annual general meeting of RIL, Ambani said that the collaboration will focus on building “sovereign enterprise AI solutions” using open models and tools from Meta.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who joined virtually, said, “At Meta, we want to deliver super intelligence to everyone. With Reliance’s reach and scale, we can bring this to every corner of India, from small startups in remote towns to large enterprises in the biggest cities.”

The companies said the partnership will make Meta’s open source Llama models available to Indian businesses, enabling them to adopt AI at scale.

Notably, the models will be available in flexible formats – businesses can run them on the cloud for ease of access or on their own dedicated infrastructure for greater control.

In addition, RIL introduced the next generation of the Jio AI Cloud, which will act as an AI-powered memory companion.

As per RIL, users will be able to search and relive personal moments in their own language, automatically organise documents such as Aadhaar cards under identity categories, and use the new AI Create Hub to turn simple photographs into shareable reels.

Ambani also announced the incorporation of a wholly owned AI subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence. The new unit will work with Google to combine Reliance’s scale with Google’s cloud and AI expertise, aiming to support developers, startups and enterprises across India.

Notably, the new AI subsidiary of RIL will focus on four areas:

  • Building gigawatt-scale AI data centres, starting with Jamnagar
  • Forging global partnerships with leading tech firms
  • Delivering India-focused AI services across consumers, businesses and key sectors like education, healthcare and agriculture
  • Creating a hub for top research and engineering talent to drive innovation

AI was a common theme at the AGM. Ambani said that RIL is developing AI as a new growth engine, embedding it across its businesses — retail, telecom, energy, and entertainment.

“With its scale, talent and entrepreneurial spirit, India is uniquely positioned to lead in this new era of AI, clean energy and genomics,” said Ambani.
