PM Modi says stable India-China ties key for global peace ahead of SCO summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 29) said India and China, as two of the world’s largest economies, must work together to stabilise the global economic order, stressing that steady ties between New Delhi and Beijing are crucial for regional and global peace.

In a written interview with Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun, ahead of his visit to China, PM Modi said, “Given the current volatility in the world economy, it is also important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order.”

The prime minister is currently in Tokyo for the India-Japan Economic Forum as part of his two-day visit to Japan from August 29-30. He will next travel to Tianjin at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on August 31 and September 1. Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Xi on the sidelines of the summit, his first visit to China in seven years since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

Modi said his meeting with Xi in Kazan last year had helped improve relations. “Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, steady and positive progress has been made in our bilateral ties,” he told the newspaper.

He added that cordial ties between the two neighbours would strengthen global prosperity. “Stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China, as two neighbours and the two largest nations on earth, can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity. This is also crucial for a multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world,” he said.

He added, “India is ready to advance bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, and to enhance strategic communication to address our developmental challenges.”

The SCO summit, where Modi will meet leaders including Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, will deliberate on regional security and cooperation. The 10-member bloc includes India, China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan and Central Asian nations.
