India’s Electronics Manufacturing Sector Creates 2.5 Million Jobs, Says Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, ETTelecom
NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday that India’s fledgling electronics manufacturing sector today employs over 25 lakh people across various categories.
“I would also like to share with you that as of today, the electronics manufacturing sector is employing about 2.5 million people in the country. These employees work in laptops, servers, mobile phones, routers, and other companies,” Vaishnaw said.
He was speaking at the inauguration of Optiemus’ facility for manufacturing Corning-engineered, RhinoTech-branded tempered glass screen protectors.
The Central government, through the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for 14 key sectors, including mobile phones and telecom equipment, and other supportive initiatives, aims to boost employment creation, drive “AtmaNirbharta” (self-reliance), and cut down reliance on imports.
As per a Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) statement last month, the PLI scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing generated additional direct jobs for over 1.30 lakh people, while the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware generated additional employment of 5,056 till June.
Vaishnaw said India has steadily and gradually started manufacturing mobile phone components, including tempered glass. “Tempered glass used to be imported, but with the commencement of operations here, more than 25 million units will start getting manufactured in India,” he added.

In the first phase, it will have an installed capacity of 25 million units per annum, and in the second phase, Optiemus will additionally invest ₹800 crore to make 200 million units. During this period, the direct job creation is expected to increase from 600 to over 4,500.
“Despite being one of the world’s largest mobile phone markets, India has relied on imports for tempered glass. With this initiative, we are looking at building global-scale capabilities to support the Indian and international markets with the best quality products,” said Ashok Kumar Gupta, chairman, Optiemus Infracom.
Citing third-party estimates, Optiemus had said India’s screen protector market size was valued $2.5 billion in 2024, and will double to $5 billion by 2030.
Optiemus expects a revenue of ₹1,800-2,000 crore by the end of fiscal year 2027, following the launch of the RhinoTech-branded tempered glass protectors.
