AROUND TOWN: Evening for public radio draws music lovers supporting KCME and Jazz 93.5 FM | Lifestyle
A variety show of jazz and classical music by local musicians made for a lively August evening in the theater at The Colorado Springs School.
It was also an opportunity for the community to be entertained while supporting public classical radio station KCME, which has been operating since 1979, and sister station Jazz 93.5 FM.
General Manager Stephanie Horton said the night was “a tribute to the incredible artists and storytellers who enrich our region and the stations that bring this music to life every day on the airwaves.”
In addition, she told the enthusiastic audience, this year’s fundraising showcase had an even more important purpose this year. “As you may know, recent federal budget cuts have resulted in the loss of Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding,” eliminating 10% of the stations’ operating budget. CPB stations, under FCC regulations, are not allowed to sell advertising or commercials, instead relying on grants, membership drives and donors.
The back cover of the show’s program echoed Horton’s focus forward: “Sustain KCME & Jazz 93.5 FM. Defunded, but Not Defeated.” She has worked in public media for a decade, including six years at Houston Public Media.
A donor VIP reception preceded the show, with music by Lookee’ Here and time on the outdoor grounds.
Nathan Halverson, Colorado Springs Conservatory CEO, served as a show emcee.
The variety show featured a variety of well-known musicians and instructors, many with degrees from major universities and years of performance around the country.
Robert Bruce, station manager and KCME host, is familiar from local music productions. KCME hosts who performed were Michael Campion, Jamar Cruz, Pam DeVier, Lauren Robinson and JJ Sechan. BJ Estares and Music Director Alyssa Mongiovi are with Jazz 93.5 FM. Special guests were Charlie Katz, guitar and piano, and Christopher Pawlowski, bassoon and contrabassoon.
Finale features were members of Tidal Breeze Cool Energy: Terri Pederson, trumpet; Henrique de Almeida, drums; Mark Burditt, trombone; Brad Eastin, saxophone; Marc Neihof, bass; and Trip Ziegler, piano.
