Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has revealed that a film adaptation of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will “never” happen – and he’s blamed JK Rowling for it

Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has dismissed any possibility of reuniting the original cast for a Cursed Child film adaptation.
The filmmaker – who directed the opening two films in the magical franchise – maintains that J. K. Rowling’s contentious anti-transgender comments have rendered it “impossible” for stars like Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) to make a comeback to the beloved series.
Speaking to The Times about a potential movie based on the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage production, he declared: “It’s never going to happen. Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible.”
Radcliffe has previously stated he wouldn’t be keen to take on his famous character again for a Cursed Child adaptation.
Speaking to the New York Times newspaper in 2022, he explained: “This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore.
“I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of ‘Potter’ okay and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.”
Whilst the Lost City star hasn’t completely dismissed the possibility, he emphasises that supporters would need to wait considerably longer to witness his return as Harry.
He commented: “I’m never going to say never, but the Star Wars guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”
