Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The hit children’s TV series Bluey is getting a feature-length movie, as announced earlier this year, and now we finally have a release date — but it’s further off than you might think.

On the official Bluey website blog, BBC Studios, Walt Disney Studios, and Ludo Studios announced that Bluey: The Movie will be released on August 6, 2027.

Bluey: The Movie will be a feature-length animated film, with the studios revealing that the film will be CG-animated. It’s set to be produced by Amber Naismith, who worked on films like Happy Feet and The Lego Movie, and co-directed by Bluey series director Richard Jeffery. The film will be financed by BBC Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, and will be released theatrically around the world.

It’s expected to be released globally on Disney+ following its theatrical run, although details of its digital streaming release aren’t available at this stage. Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack will be reprising their voice roles as Chilli and Bandit, respectively, in the film.

Bluey was created by Australian animation studio Ludo Studio and first premiered on ABC Kids in Australia in 2018. It focuses on young child Bluey, her sister Bingo, and her parents, Chilli and Bandit, all of whom are dogs, as they navigate family life and growing up.

The series was picked up by Disney for its US release, and quickly became a global sensation. Critics have praised it for its mature approach to children’s storytelling, focus on Australian culture, and appeal not just to children, but to adults, too.

Over 150 episodes of the series have been released to date, each of which run for around seven minutes. The one major exception is The Sign, a 28-minute special that saw the family grappling with the idea of moving to a different area, which would see Bluey and Bingo lose their friends. The episode became the best-rated episode in the series’ history, attracting 2.3 million viewers in Australia and a further 10.4 million viewers on Disney+ globally.
