The NC women’s hockey teams with the most national championships
The NC women’s hockey championship began in 2001 with the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs winning the first national championship. Since then, four other teams have claimed the crown. Here’s a look at all the teams with NC women’s hockey national championships:
2025 CHAMPS: Wisconsin wins 2025 NC women’s hockey championship
Wisconsin — 8 (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025)
Wisconsin is the most successful program in NC women’s college hockey history with eight national championships. The Badgers won their first title in 2006 and their most recent in 2025. Wisconsin has been on a tear recently, winning four of the last six national championships dating back to 2019. The Badgers have also appeared in three straight championship games against Ohio State since 2023, winning in 2023 and 2025.

Minnesota — 6 (2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016)
Minnesota has the second-most national championships with six, starting with back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. Interestingly, Minnesota’s national championships have always come in pairs, as they won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, and again in 2015 and 2016. The Golden Gophers reached the Frozen Four in 2023 and 2025, but on both occasions, they lost to the eventual champion, Wisconsin.

Minnesota-Duluth — 5 (2001, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2010)
UMD dominated the first few years of the NC women’s hockey national championship, winning three consecutive titles from 2001 to 2003. The Bulldogs added two more championships in 2008 and 2010, but they have only made the Frozen Four twice since then—most recently in 2022, when they lost to Ohio State in the national championship game.
Clarkson — 3 (2014, 2017, 2018)
Clarkson was the first women’s hockey team outside of the WCHA conference to win a national championship, defeating back-to-back defending champs Minnesota in 2014. The Golden Knights later won back-to-back titles of their own in 2017 and 2018 to bring the program total to three. They have since made two Frozen Four appearances in 2019 and 2024 and a quarterfinals appearance in 2025.

Ohio State — 2 (2022, 2024)
Ohio State has burst onto the women’s hockey scene in recent years, appearing in four-straight national championship games since 2022. The Buckeyes took down UMD in 2022 to win their first title and shut out Wisconsin, 1-0, in 2024 for their second. Ohio State has faced Wisconsin in the past three Frozen Four championship games, most recently losing to the Badgers in 2025 in an overtime thriller.
