‘Removing Akwaaba Magic could hurt Ghana’s film industry’ – Gloria Sarfo

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has added her voice to the ongoing standoff between Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and pay-TV operator MultiChoice Ghana, warning that the fallout could severely impact the country’s film industry.

The controversy stems from Sam George’s directive for MultiChoice to reduce its DStv subscription fees by 30%, citing unfair pricing disparities between Ghana and neighbouring countries like Nigeria.

While the minister claimed the company had agreed to a reduction, MultiChoice swiftly denied this, stating that no such agreement had been reached and that discussions were still ongoing.

Speaking during a GhanaWeb X Space session on Friday, September 12, 2025, Gloria Sarfo expressed concern over the potential consequences of the feud. She specifically highlighted Akwaaba Magic, a DStv channel dedicated to Ghanaian content, as a vital lifeline for the local film industry.

“If Akwaaba Magic is not to be here, our industry will still go on, but we will lose to some extent because they have been there; they have rescued us at some point. Whether it wasn’t enough or Akwaaba Magic didn’t give producers enough to produce, they still did something when the industry was struggling. So inasmuch as we won’t be completely affected when it shuts down, we would still be found wanting,” she said.

Her comments come amid fears that regulatory action against MultiChoice could lead to the suspension of its broadcasting license, which would include the removal of channels like Akwaaba Magic.

As the Stakeholder Committee chaired by Sam George continues its review of DStv pricing, industry players and creatives are urging both parties to prioritise the cultural and economic impact of their decisions.
