Saskatchewan celebrates music education with province-wide initiative
Saskatchewan will officially mark Music Education Day on Monday, September 15, with an event at the Wascana Bandstand in Regina.
The gathering, which begins at noon, will bring together music educators, students, parents, and provincial leaders to celebrate the role of music in schools and communities. The Honourable Everett Hindley, Minister of Education, will formally proclaim Saskatchewan Music Education Day, alongside representatives from the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and SaskCulture Inc.
The day also marks the launch of a new province-wide initiative to enhance accessibility and equity in music instruction. The Saskatchewan Music Educators Association (SMEA) is providing free, hands-on classroom kits to teachers, featuring instruments and resources such as boomwhackers, movement scarves, and bucket drumming sets.
“These new classroom kits are more than just instruments. They’re a statement of our commitment to inclusive and high-quality music education for every student in Saskatchewan,” said SMEA President Sharon Bates. “We know that when educators are given the right tools, creativity flourishes and learning deepens.”
Each kit includes ready-to-use activities designed by educators to meet provincial curriculum outcomes, along with video playlists, lesson plans, and tips for cross-curricular integration. Students attending the event will demonstrate how the kits promote creativity, rhythm, movement, and teamwork.
“Music education brings people together and fosters creativity, collaboration, and discipline, helping students grow both musically and academically,” said Hindley. “We thank our educators for their dedication in supporting quality music education programs across the province.”
The initiative, made possible with support from SaskCulture Inc., aims to remove financial and geographic barriers to participation in music programs. Kits are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to active SMEA members teaching in Saskatchewan.
